Skid Row Marathon: Running for Hope and Change
A Night of Hope and Transformation: Exploring the Powerful Journey of the Documentary Skid Row Marathon and the Impact of Judge Craig Mitchell’s Life-Changing Work
The evening at Glen Glenn Studio was a powerful celebration of resilience and hope. Guests were treated to the moving documentary Skid Row Marathon in stunning HDR by Barco, after an insightful presentation showcasing the enhanced impact of the new format, followed by a networking reception.
The film tells the story of recovering addicts and former convicts who find new purpose through marathon training under the dedicated mentorship of Judge Craig Mitchell. From David Askew’s rediscovery of painting to Ben Shirley’s renewed passion for music, Rebecca Hayes’s courageous return to the workforce, and Rafael Cabrera’s quiet dignity after 28 years in prison, each story highlighted the transformative power of compassion and determination.
Gabi and Mark Hayes, who selflessly filmed under extreme conditions on Skid Row, brought authenticity and grit to the documentary. Kim Planert and James Stolz added breathtaking cinematography and a dynamic musical composition, elevating the narrative and delivering a deeply emotional experience.
The post-screening discussion was as inspirational as the film itself. Judge Mitchell shared his tireless efforts to help hundreds of individuals turn their lives around, raising funds to take them to marathons around the world and inspiring similar initiatives in other communities.
The production team recounted the challenges of filming in such a raw environment, immersing themselves in the homeless community, and navigating logistical hurdles like international travel for the running club.
Despite being created without initial funding, Skid Row Marathon has reached a global audience through platforms like Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple TV, Vimeo, Peacock, Lufthansa, Swiss Air and Austrian Air in-flight program. Its impact continues to grow, spreading awareness about homelessness in Los Angeles and the extraordinary efforts of Judge Mitchell and the Skid Row Running Club.

“When we read an article in the LA Times about a judge who started a running club on skid row, the heart of LA’s homeless community, we decided to show up and run. This began a journey that has now lasted four years. Our film is about more than just running marathons. It’s about the camaraderie of an unlikely group of individuals who receive a second chance at life, all brought on by a simple act of kindness.” – Mark Hayes
