Beyond the Buzzwords: GABA and Orange County AI Confront AI’s Hard Truths at OC Tech Week

From Hype to the Real World: Making AI Work for Complex Businesses, Newport Beach, CA, October 22, 2026

GABA Southern California, in partnership with Orange County AI, brought together a packed room in Newport Beach for a panel discussion that was part of this year’s OC Tech Week. The evening opened with a special welcome from Farrah N. Khan, Co-Chair of OC Tech Week 2026, former Mayor of Irvine, and a board member of Tech Coast Venture Network, the nonprofit behind OC Tech Week, whose presence set the tone for a conversation aimed squarely at the hard truths of enterprise AI execution, not the buzzwords surrounding it.

Moderated by Hans-Martin Will, PhD of LegalMation, the panel brought together Sergei Azernikov, PhD of Glidewell Laboratories, Lukas N.P. Egger of SAP Signavio, and Stephan Mandt, PhD of UC Irvine for a wide-ranging discussion on what it takes to deploy intelligent systems in manufacturing and enterprise settings.

The conversation moved through genuinely fresh ground. The panel dissected the perennial “buy versus build” dilemma facing technology leaders, before Lukas offered a counterintuitive insight: highly regulated industries, often assumed to be AI laggards, are in fact uniquely “agent-ready” thanks to the strict guardrails they already operate under. Stephan turned the lens toward research itself, describing a structural divide in AI development: universities hold the raw talent and the novel ideas but lack the massive compute needed to test them at scale, while large AI labs have the resources but remain tied to rigid, scale-driven approaches. The discussion closed with a round of rapid-fire “Aha!” moments that took a surprisingly personal turn. Sergei shared his amazement at watching his 81-year-old founder adopt AI tools with ease, and Lukas noted how the technology has a quiet leveling effect, letting younger team members punch well above their traditional role.

Running through the evening was a shared theme: AI’s real value in complex businesses isn’t about replacing expertise, it’s about amplifying it, whether that means a veteran cofounder decades into his career, a graduate student just starting out, or an industry built on compliance finding itself ahead of the curve.

The audience matched the conversation’s ambition. Close to a dozen AI company founders and CEOs filled the room, from MetaSequoia AI, KAMPP, WebinOne, Redrayn, and Frowg Systems to Diamond Star Technologies, LineShift Partners, AdgOptz, and K Foundry. They sat alongside enterprise technology leaders from SAP Labs, Siemens AG, and Presidio, manufacturing voices from Laseronics and S&J Machining, senior leadership from Pacific Life and Western Growers, and a graduate student from Cal State Fullerton carrying the evening’s academic thread into the next generation.

A special thank you to Tech Coast Venture Network and OC Tech Week for welcoming this panel into their program, to Orange County AI for co-hosting the evening alongside GABA, to Hans-Martin Will for moderating such a rich conversation, to our panelists for their candor and insight, and to our highly engaged audience for making this such a memorable night.
