The film tells the story of recovering addicts and former convicts who find new purpose through marathon training under the dedicated mentorship of Judge Craig Mitchell. From David Askew\u2019s rediscovery of painting to Ben Shirley\u2019s renewed passion for music, Rebecca Hayes\u2019s courageous return to the workforce, and Rafael Cabrera\u2019s quiet dignity after 28 years in prison, each story highlighted the transformative power of compassion and determination.<\/p>\n

Gabi and Mark Hayes, who selflessly filmed under extreme conditions on Skid Row, brought authenticity and grit to the documentary. Kim Planert and James Stolz added breathtaking cinematography and a dynamic musical composition, elevating the narrative and delivering a deeply emotional experience.<\/p>\n

The post-screening discussion was as inspirational as the film itself. Judge Mitchell shared his tireless efforts to help hundreds of individuals turn their lives around, raising funds to take them to marathons around the world and inspiring similar initiatives in other communities.<\/p>\n

The production team recounted the challenges of filming in such a raw environment, immersing themselves in the homeless community, and navigating logistical hurdles like international travel for the running club.<\/p>\n

Despite being created without initial funding, Skid Row Marathon has reached a global audience through platforms like Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple TV, Vimeo, Peacock, Lufthansa, Swiss Air and Austrian Air in-flight program. Its impact continues to grow, spreading awareness about homelessness in Los Angeles and the extraordinary efforts of Judge Mitchell and the Skid Row Running Club.<\/p>\n

Synopsis<\/h2>\n

Skid Row Marathon tells the inspiring story of a criminal court judge who starts a running club on LA\u2019s notorious skid row, training a diverse group of addicts and criminals to run marathons. This life-changing initiative follows four runners as they rise from the mean streets of LA to compete in marathons worldwide, continually battling homelessness and addiction. Their journey is one of hope, friendship, and dignity.<\/p>\n

Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States, estimated at over 4,400, and has been known for its condensed homeless population since at least the 1930s.<\/p>\n

This began a journey that has now lasted four years. Our film is about more than just running marathons.
