The German American Business Association (GABA) is a professional, member-driven non-profit organization with the purpose of strengthening transatlantic business. GABA has built on German-Californian networking and knowledge sharing since 2001 and operates at the forefront of international business, trends, and technology. We offer our members and our vibrant German American business community powerful networking and impactful events to share knowledge, gain insights, and expand professional connections and business partnerships. As part of our succession planning, we are looking for the next Executive Director to lead GABA’s growth strategy and operations.

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors and maintains a strong outward-facing presence. Top-level responsibilities include Board governance, assuring financial performance and viability, driving mission and strategy, and implementation and oversight of the organization’s operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive the growth of GABA memberships & sponsorships in coordination with Board members, and seek, vet and implement additional revenue streams for GABA, as appropriate, such as grants, consulting, joint projects, partnerships, referral programs.
  • Oversee event design, implementation, and evaluation: Ensure GABA’s events and programs are designed and implemented in high quality and evaluated well. This includes activating and coordinating with GABA’s knowledge experts and leaders who are the main content contributors. Develop and maintain strong relationships with all Board members, large GABA members and other important stakeholders such as event partners and outreach partners.
  • Drive and manage operations and supporting technology tools with the support of contractors. Conceive marketing strategy and lead outreach and marketing activities overseeing volunteers and staff. Oversee and manage GABA finances and budget, in conjunction with the CFO (Board Treasurer) and Tax Advisor.
  • Ensure compliance and best practices in cooperation with Board members.
  • Support the Board with meetings, information, communication, alignment, and decision preparation.
  • Hire, onboard, manage, develop, and retain contractors and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership.
  • Two or more years of senior nonprofit management experience.
  • Experience and skill in working with a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to staff, Board, volunteers, members, and sponsors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to members, sponsors, volunteers, and the overall community.
  • Strong public presence, engaging with executives and community leaders.
  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results, including active experience generating memberships and sponsorship contributions.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and engage staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
  • Strong project and program management skills and experience.
  • Strong event creation and management experience, in terms of content, stakeholder management, budgeting, raising sponsorships, marketing, and logistics for both in-person and virtual events, with additional hybrid event experience preferred. Experience with event and membership management databases, ideally with GrowthZone. Experience with Website management, Mailchimp (or similar), and Social Media strategy.
  • Solid financial management skills, including budget preparation support, analysis, decision making and reporting. Previous grant writing skills desired.
  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including members, partner agencies and volunteers. Strong written and oral communication skills, including strong public speaking ability.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy and positivity.
  • Proven history of maintaining overview and calm while driving multiple workstreams under time constraints.
  • Understanding of the German American business community. Business-level German language skills are preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Google tools and Microsoft Office.
  • Full commitment to GABA’s mission, values, and goals.
